Multi V Die: Application and Selection Guide

Metal bending efficiency and precision are key indicators of a company’s competitiveness. In traditional production, using a single V die to handle different plate thicknesses and bending conditions often requires frequent tool changes. This not only increases manual operation time but also significantly raises equipment downtime costs.

To improve the flexibility of bending processes involving multiple plate thicknesses, multi-V dies are being introduced and widely used. Based on SIEOR’s professional manufacturing experience, this article explains the advantages, technical indicators, and selection tips for multi-V dies.

Multi V Die: Application And Selection Guide

What is a Multi-V Die?

A multi-V die (also called a multi-opening die) is a press brake bottom die that integrates several V-openings of different widths into a single tool body.

By rotating or moving the die sideways, operators can switch to the required V-opening size—such as V8, V12, V16, V20, or V25—within seconds without removing the tool. This “multi-purpose” design is especially suitable for high-mix, low-volume production and sheet metal processing where plate thicknesses change frequently.

Why Choose a Multi-V Die?

1. Fast Tool Changes and Higher Production Efficiency In traditional processes, a full bottom die change usually takes 15–30 minutes. A multi-V die only requires rotating the die body to switch V-openings, greatly reducing downtime. In high-frequency tool change environments, this significantly lowers non-processing time and improves overall bending efficiency.

2. Lower Overall Costs One multi-V die set integrating 4–6 V-openings usually costs less to purchase and maintain than the total of multiple single V die sets. It also effectively saves storage space for tools.

3. Improved Material Adaptability By choosing the right V-opening combinations, multi-V dies can cover common bending needs ranging from thin plates to medium-thick plates. The specific application range should be evaluated based on material strength, plate thickness, and press brake tonnage.

4. Better Bending Stability The integrated design reduces positioning errors caused by repeatedly installing and removing tools. This helps improve angle repeatability and production stability.

How to Select a Multi-V Die Accurately? (Engineering Rules)

Choosing the right parameters affects both bending quality and tool life. Below are common engineering experience rules:

V-opening Width Selection (V) Under air bending conditions for common carbon steel, the V-opening width is usually 6–10 times the plate thickness (t):

V≈6t∼10tV \approx 6t \sim 10t

Bending Inner Radius (R) During the air bending process, the formed inner radius is usually about 1/8 of the V-opening width:

R≈V8R \approx \frac{V}{8}

Note that the actual inner radius will change based on the material’s yield strength and process parameters.

Minimum Leg Length (Minimum Leg) To prevent the plate from sliding into the V-opening during bending, the minimum leg length is recommended to be at least:

Lmin≈0.6V∼0.7VLmin \approx 0.6V \sim 0.7V

Why Choose SIEOR?

At SIEOR, we view tooling as a core control unit for bending stability, not just a consumable item.

  • Materials and Heat Treatment: We use high-grade alloy tool steel (such as 42CrMo) and a vacuum heat treatment process. This keeps the tool hardness stable at HRC 55–60, balancing wear resistance and pressure resistance.
  • Precision Manufacturing: Using CNC machining and precision grinding, we ensure consistency in V-opening angles, dimensions, and R-radii. This reduces the inconsistency caused by bending springback.
  • Custom Interface Solutions: We provide integrated or segmented multi-V dies for different press brake systems (AMADA, WILA, TRUMPF, etc.). Common lengths cover 3m, 4m, and 6m.
  • Global Validation: SIEOR multi-V dies are widely used in the Americas, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Customers recognize us for our long-term stability and consistency.

Maintenance and Care Suggestions

To extend the life of your multi-V die, please note the following:

  • Regular Cleaning: Clean out metal chips and impurities from the V-openings to avoid damaging the workpiece surface.
  • Rust Prevention: Apply rust-preventive oil when the tool is not in use for a long time.
  • Check Rotation Mechanism: Ensure the rotation or locking devices operate smoothly and position accurately.

Multi-V dies are essential for flexible bending and high-efficiency production. With correct parameter selection and proper maintenance, they offer significant advantages in efficiency, cost, and consistency. Choosing a supplier with engineering experience and strict quality control is key to ensuring long-term stable operation.

SIEOR is committed to providing you with multi-V die solutions that offer longer life and higher precision. If you are looking for bending tools to improve factory competitiveness or need help selecting tools for specific materials and conditions, please contact our technical team.
